How to Stay Active No Matter Where You Are
Traveling can often disrupt our daily routines, and finding time to stay active can be a challenge—whether it’s carving out some personal time on a group tour, squeezing in moments for yourself during a family-packed itinerary, or finding peace amid the whirlwind of solo backpacking.
Sometimes, staying active while traveling can be as simple as adding an extra 30 minutes to your morning routine or choosing to walk instead of using public transport.
After spending a considerable amount of time on the move, I’ve mastered a few strategies to maintain my fitness and well-being, regardless of my destination.
In this article, I’ll share my top tips for keeping active and taking care of both your body and mind while traveling, so you can bring these healthy habits along on any adventure.
Mindfulness
A unique aspect of many of the methods outlined in this article is that they double as active forms of mindfulness and meditation. Engaging in physical activities that promote a state of active meditation is incredibly beneficial for our mental health and stability, particularly amidst the unpredictability of travel.
1. Walking
The simplest and most accessible activity is walking. Whether it’s choosing to stroll a bit farther instead of hopping in a cab, or joining a walking tour, walking remains the ultimate way to stay active while traveling. Whenever I arrive in a new city, I naturally find myself covering thousands of steps each day. It’s not just a means of transportation; it’s a fantastic way to immerse myself in the new environment and stay mindful of my surroundings. Whenever I have a spare moment in my itinerary, I make it a point to take a brief walk to keep my body moving.
2. Yoga
Another fantastic way I stay active while on the road is through yoga. Beyond its physical benefits, yoga offers profound mental rewards. I often discover yoga classes available at hostels or within the towns I’m visiting. Alternatively, the abundance of yoga videos on platforms like YouTube and online subscriptions allows me to follow a flow tailored to my schedule. Whether practicing in a studio, on a beach towel by the sea, or on the grass in a park, the transformative power of yoga knows no limits—it’s an incredible practice that can be embraced anywhere your travels take you.

3. Running
Moving on, let’s talk about running. If you’re someone who, like me, once avoided running at all costs, consider giving it a chance when exploring a new city. Running in a fresh setting completely shifted my perspective on the activity. Instead of fixating on the exertion, I found myself engrossed in the sights around me. I make it a habit to carry my running shoes wherever I go, ensuring I can squeeze in a jog or run no matter the location.
One memorable experience was last autumn when I embarked on a six-mile run through London, passing iconic landmarks like Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, and the Tower of London. The beauty of running lies in its flexibility—you can tailor it to fit your schedule, whether it’s a brisk one-mile jog or a longer expedition.
4. Hiking
Another fantastic way to incorporate physical activity into your travels is by immersing yourself in the environment and engaging in activities that take advantage of your surroundings. For me, hiking tops the list. I love having the opportunity to discover new trails and paths, not only to witness stunning views and explore unfamiliar terrain but also to engage in a satisfying workout. Gaining a new vantage point of destinations during a hike cultivates a deep appreciation for both the location itself and the path traveled to reach it.The experience is always rewarding and well worth the effort.
5. Bodyweight Workout
Finally, on occasions when I’m seeking a different workout routine, I opt for bodyweight exercises like HIIT or Pilates. With just a towel or mat and a small space, I can easily dedicate 20 to 30 minutes to a workout routine found on YouTube. Whether indoors or outdoors, as long as there’s enough room, you can make it work. A park or any open patch of grass is perfect for this purpose.

It’s crucial to acknowledge that there will be days during your travels when time or circumstances won’t allow for a full workout or your usual level of physical activity. However, travel isn’t about adhering to a strict routine—it’s about embracing the unpredictability and adapting to new situations. Patience is key as you navigate unfamiliar territory, and maintaining balance is essential for crafting a fulfilling lifestyle on the road.
