Picture this: a paradise where azure waters meet golden sands, and quaint villages nestle amidst rolling hills. Welcome to Naxos, Greece’s best-kept secret! While many flock to the more popular Greek islands, Naxos quietly charms its visitors with its beauty and authentic Greek charm. From ancient ruins to endless stretches of pristine beaches, this island offers a little slice of heaven for every traveler seeking tranquility and adventure.

With just three precious days to explore this stunning island, we were determined to soak up every moment, wishing we could extend our stay indefinitely. Our Airbnb, nestled near Naxos port, offered not only convenience but also easy access to an abundance of charming shops, boutiques, and seaside eateries. The port area is bustling with life, and its proximity to various attractions made it the perfect base for our adventures.

One of the island’s most striking landmarks is the Temple of Apollo, perched majestically at the island’s edge. This iconic structure is visible from various vantage points around Naxos. Whether you see it bathed in the golden hues of sunrise or glowing in the gentle light of sunset, the temple remains a breathtaking sight. Its beauty and historical significance make it a must-see for anyone visiting the island.

Plaka Beach, situated south of Naxos port, quickly stole our hearts and became one of our cherished finds in all of Greece. Serene and expansive, it offered ample space for relaxation, with an abundance of lounge chairs, inviting eateries, and crystal-clear waters calling for a refreshing swim. The beach’s peaceful ambiance made it an ideal spot to unwind and enjoy the natural beauty of Naxos. As we explored further along the western coastline, we discovered even more stunning beaches, each one a picturesque paradise. Although our time on the island was limited, we could only dream of the wonders awaiting us on the eastern shores.

For an unforgettable Naxos experience, I can’t emphasize enough the importance of renting a car. As the largest island in the Cyclades, its treasures extend far beyond the confines of the main port area. Having our own transportation allowed us to explore at our own pace and discover the island’s hidden gems..

Equipped with our own transportation, we ventured inland to discover the hidden treasures of Naxos. Nestled amidst rolling hills, we found ancient villages seemingly frozen in time. Filoti and Chalki, in particular, captivated us with their serene ambiance and historic past, providing a window into the island’s history and peaceful retreat from the more tourist centric areas.

One of the most memorable experiences of our trip was the hike up Mount Zas, the highest peak in the Cyclades. Believed to be the birthplace of Zeus, the summit offers breathtaking views of rolling hills, mountain ranges, quaint churches dotting the landscape, and the sparkling sea below. Setting off from the port at dawn allowed us to witness the sunrise from atop the mountain. The hike involves a considerable altitude gain and is quite challenging, but the beauty and serenity of Mount Zas made it all worthwhile. The panoramic views and the sense of accomplishment from reaching the summit made it an experience I’ll always treasure.

Greek cuisine is renowned for its freshness and flavor, and Naxos truly lives up to the hype. From rooftop eateries to seaside restaurants, the island offers an abundance of culinary delights. Seafood lovers will be in heaven, as the catch of the day often makes its way straight from the sea to your plate, and squid are seen on display outside every seaside restaurant. Appetizers bursting with fresh vegetables and cheeses, and hearty Mediterranean staples characterize the enticing array of dishes available. Naxos is a foodie’s paradise waiting to be explored!

The island’s charm is absolutely enchanting, and I guarantee you’ll fall in love with its many charms. Whether you’re exploring ancient ruins, relaxing on stunning beaches, or savoring local dishes, Naxos offers a diverse range of experiences that cater to every type of traveler. I strongly recommend dedicating ample time to explore all that Naxos has to offer.
