Discover the Magic of the Nā Pali Coast: The Best Ways to Explore

The Nā Pali Coast is renowned as one of the most stunning coastlines in the world. Situated on the island of Kauai, this breathtaking stretch of rugged cliffs can be experienced in several ways: a boat tour, a helicopter tour, or hiking in.

I’ve had the chance to explore the Nā Pali Coast both via a boat tour and the famous 22-mile hike. Based on these experiences, I can confidently say it is the most beautiful place in the world. The stark contrast between the deep blue ocean and the lush green cliffs is truly amazing. There’s so much to see and explore along this coastline, which is why I highly recommend the hike if you’re healthy and capable of such an adventure.

Let’s start with the hike. This journey is not for those afraid of heights, unfit, or unwilling to camp and carry all their gear. It’s a true backpacking experience, and is named one of the most dangerous hikes in the US. The hike spans 22 miles round-trip, with parts of the trail perched on open cliff sides. The drop-offs are deadly, so it’s crucial to have the right resources: sturdy hiking boots, hiking sticks, water filters, adequate food, and proper hiking attire. To camp on the beach, you must obtain a permit for the number of days you plan to stay. Only 60 people are allowed on the trail each day, so permits sell out quickly.

Once you have everything you need and have planned your itinerary, you can enjoy the most wonderful place in the world. I suggest allowing three days for the hike, giving yourself a full day to relax and soak in the breathtaking views and energy at Kalalau Beach. The hike itself is stunning, with numerous waterfalls and amazing views of the mountain range and ocean. You might even spot some mountain goats along the way.

Upon reaching Kalalau Beach, there’s plenty of space to set up camp. There’s an outhouse and some supplies left by previous hikers that you can use. Be sure to bring protection from the rain, as Kauai’s weather is unpredictable. From here, you can explore the sea caves, the waterfall, and take another hike into the Kalalau Valley. This lush area of Kauai is incredibly rich with things to discover. You could easily spend a week here and still want more. The energy on this beach and throughout the hike is indescribable. It’s absolutely magical. If you have the chance to visit Kauai and experience the Nā Pali Coast, I highly recommend dedicating a few days to complete this journey.

Next, while I haven’t done the helicopter tour myself, I’ve heard it offers a unique perspective of the coast from above, showcasing all the valleys, waterfalls, and diverse landscapes. I did, however, go on a boat tour a few months after completing the hike. This experience was also beautiful. We rented a private catamaran that took us from the southern point of Kauai up the coastline to Kalalau Beach. We explored many sea caves, spotted turtles, and admired coral reefs. We even had the opportunity to jump off the boat and go snorkeling. We saw so many different species underwater, as well as dozens of dolphin pods that had been swimming around our boat for the entirety of the trip.

The views from the boat were incredible and provided a different perspective of the coastline, but after the hike, the boat tour didn’t feel as special to me. Many people find the boat tours extremely enjoyable and practical, but for me, the hike was a more rewarding and immersive experience.

If you’re planning to visit the Nā Pali Coast, consider all your options and choose the one that best suits your interests and abilities. Whether you hike, take a boat tour, or fly above in a helicopter, you’re sure to witness the unparalleled beauty of this remarkable place.
