Viajero Hostel Cartagena is part of the renowned Viajero chain, celebrated as the best hostel company in South America in 2024. And let me tell you, they truly live up to their impressive reputation.
Nestled in the heart of Cartagena’s Centro, or walled city, this hostel has an ideal location. The surroundings are as picturesque as they are historic, with the iconic stone walls stretching towards the ocean, brightly colored colonial houses, and lush, vibrant flowers lining the streets. Viajero Hostel sits on a lovely street that feels remarkably safe and private, offering a peaceful retreat from the bustling city life.

From the moment I walked through the doors, I was greeted by an incredibly friendly and welcoming staff. They provided a wealth of information about local events, must-see sights, and insider tips that made my stay all the more immersive. With 24-hour reception and a comprehensive security system, including multiple locks and safes, I felt completely secure. In a city like Cartagena, where safety is a top priority for travelers, such attention to security is crucial.
The hostel’s amenities, like on-site water bottles and linen rentals, added a convenient touch to my stay, especially in the sweltering Cartagena climate. Additionally, the laundry facilities were a lifesaver for freshening up my clothes after days of exploration.
I stayed in an eight-bed all-female dorm for about $16 USD per night in May 2023. The room was well air-conditioned, a significant perk given the relentless Cartagena heat. The air conditioning was essential for a comfortable stay, offering a cool haven from the city’s temperatures. The dorm provided ample storage, towel hooks, and privacy curtains for each bed, enhancing comfort and security. The beds were extremely comfortable, providing the perfect set up for a good nights sleep. The shared bathrooms, which were located conveniently near the dorms, were well-maintained and met the typical standards of a quality hostel.

The common areas of the hostel were a true highlight. The open-air lounge was a vibrant space filled with half a dozen hammocks, lounge chairs, and numerous spots ideal for socializing. There was also a bar and restaurant that served excellent food, perfect for casual meals or evening drinks. The pool was a refreshing oasis to get a break from the heat, and the area transformed into a lively dance floor by night, adding to the hostel’s vibrant atmosphere. For those on a budget, the fully equipped kitchen offered a fantastic option for cooking your own meals, further enhancing the value of the stay.

Another standout feature was the small movie room, a cozy space complete with comfortable couches and a large TV. It was a great place to unwind after a day of sightseeing or to catch up with fellow travelers over a film. This thoughtful addition, along with the friendly staff and extensive range of activities, made Viajero Hostel Cartagena an outstanding choice for any backpacker looking for a blend of comfort, safety, and local immersion.
One of the best features of Viajero Hostel was their commitment to providing a safe and enjoyable experience for solo travelers, especially when it came to nightlife. The hostel organized pub and bar crawls that allowed us to explore Cartagena’s vibrant nightlife with a group. This not only made the experience more fun but also ensured that solo travelers could enjoy going out without feeling vulnerable. Guided by the hostel staff, we ventured through local bars and clubs, experiencing the city’s nightlife with the added comfort of knowing we were in safe hands.

Adding to the fun, Viajero Hostel held a White Party each week, where everyone put on their best white attire for an evening of music, dancing, and camaraderie. This event was a fantastic way to bond with fellow travelers and immerse oneself in the hostel’s lively and exciting culture. It was a highlight of my stay, showcasing the hostel’s dedication to creating memorable and enjoyable experiences.
The hostel’s focus on wellness was also evident through their yoga classes and beach runs. These activities provided a perfect balance to the nights of revelry, helping guests stay active and healthy. The yoga sessions, led by skilled local instructors, offered a calming and rejuvenating start to the day, while the beach runs were a great way to enjoy Cartagena’s stunning coastline.
Viajero Hostel also offered salsa classes, which were an incredible way to dive into the local culture. These classes, led by talented local dancers, provided a fun and immersive experience, allowing us to learn the basics of salsa while enjoying the beautiful rhythms of Colombian music. It was a fantastic opportunity to connect with the local culture and engage with fellow travelers in a lively and interactive setting.
Considering the location and the quality of the accommodation, Viajero Hostel offers exceptional value for money. The price is very reasonable for the amenities and experiences provided, especially in such a prime area of Cartagena. If you find yourself in Cartagena or traveling through South America, I wholeheartedly recommend staying at Viajero Hostels, with their locations spanning Colombia, Uruguay, Argentina, and Mexico.
