As I’ve traveled around the world, some of my most unforgettable moments have taken place on the water. Boat tours offer a unique way to explore, combining adventure, relaxation, and breathtaking views. Here, I’m sharing eight of my favorite boat trips, each special in its own way.
1. Santorini Daytime Catamaran

While Santorini is known for its beauty, the crowds during the summer can make it overwhelming. To escape the hustle and truly soak in the island’s magic, we opted for a catamaran tour. Sailing along the stunning cliffs and cobalt-blue waters, we stopped multiple times to snorkel and even swim in warm springs nestled in the sea. The highlight of the day was the delicious, freshly prepared Greek lunch we enjoyed onboard. Lounging on deck, basking in the sun, and absorbing the island’s natural beauty made this boat tour the perfect way to experience Santorini’s charm without the crowds.
2. Whale Watching in Maui

From November to March, Maui’s west coast becomes a hub for migrating humpback whales. It’s the ideal time for a whale-watching tour. During our trip, we were fortunate enough to see numerous whales, including mothers with calves. It was awe-inspiring to witness these massive creatures up close, and we learned fascinating details about their lives, such as their rapid growth and why they favor this part of Hawaii. The whales swam so near to the boat that it felt almost surreal. This is a must-do if you’re in Maui during the winter, offering both an educational and breathtaking experience.
3. Costa Rica Sunset Cruise

In Costa Rica’s Guanacaste region, the coastline is dotted with beautiful beaches and vibrant coastal towns. However, the highlight of our visit was a sunset cruise along this lush, picturesque coast. Sailing through the afternoon into the evening, we were treated to sweeping views of the beaches, surrounding hills, and even some wildlife. The tour included snorkeling in crystal-clear waters, relaxing in the tropical warmth, and enjoying an open bar. As the sun set, the sky painted itself in vibrant hues, and the friendly local crew added to the laid-back, enjoyable vibe. Seeing this part of Costa Rica from the water is an experience I highly recommend.
4. Sailing on Lake Como

Lake Como, with its charming lakeside towns and surrounding mountains, is best explored by boat. We spent an entire day sailing across its tranquil waters, visiting picturesque villages and admiring stunning lakeside mansions. The views were stunning, and the atmosphere on the boat was peaceful as we glided past scenic landscapes. There was also plenty of time to swim in the refreshing lake and enjoy champagne, fruit, and pastries onboard. This relaxing day on the water allowed us to fully appreciate the beauty and history of this iconic Italian destination.
5. Ha Long Bay Cruise

Ha Long Bay, located in northern Vietnam, is an otherworldly destination with hundreds of towering limestone islands. While there are many boat tour options, I recommend choosing a multi-day cruise. This allows you to explore the bay more extensively, with opportunities to kayak, swim, and even visit some of the islands. The sunrises and sunsets in Ha Long Bay are beyond words, and the peaceful stillness of the water at dawn is unforgettable. For the price, it’s one of the best value experiences in Southeast Asia, offering not just beautiful views but a true adventure.
6. Sunset Cruise in Oahu

Waikiki Beach in Oahu is famous worldwide, but its beauty is even more striking when viewed from the water. You can board a sunset cruise from the Ala Moana docks or Waikiki beach, where you will be treated to picturesque views of the city skyline and the iconic Diamond Head Crater. We had the chance to snorkel and even swim with dolphins while enjoying the peaceful ambiance of the ocean. I especially recommend the Friday night cruises, which stay out long enough to catch the weekly fireworks show over Fort DeRussy Beach. Watching the fireworks from the boat, with the city lights as a backdrop, is a magical experience.
7. Maya Bay, Thailand Boat Tour

Maya Bay, located off Koh Phi Phi in Thailand, is famous as the filming location for The Beach. The crystal-clear waters and towering limestone cliffs make it one of the most stunning places I’ve visited. The only way to see Maya Bay is by boat, and our tour also took us to other remarkable spots like Monkey Beach and prime snorkeling sites with vibrant marine life. The day concluded with an extraordinary experience: swimming with bioluminescent plankton after sunset. The glowing water was mesmerizing and made this boat tour one of my all-time favorites.
8. Na Pali Coast, Kauai

Lastly, we have the Na Pali Coast, which is renowned as one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world. Located on Kauai, this dramatic stretch of land features rugged cliffs, lush green valleys, and dozens of waterfalls. There are only three ways to access this breathtaking coastline: hiking, a helicopter tour, or by boat. If you chose the boat option, it offers the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation. As we sailed along the coast, we stopped at secluded snorkeling spots and watched dolphins playfully follow the boat. The sheer beauty of this region left me in awe, and it’s a place I’ll cherish forever.
Boat tours offer a unique perspective on some of the world’s most beautiful destinations. From the calm waters of Lake Como to the towering cliffs of Na Pali, these experiences allow you to fully immerse yourself in the natural beauty and culture of each place. If you find yourself in any of these regions, don’t miss the chance to explore by boat—it’s an experience you’ll never forget!
