Traveling solo as a woman can be one of the most empowering and life-changing experiences. It allows you to explore the world on your own terms, but it’s also important to stay smart and prioritize your safety. After traveling to almost 30 countries as a solo female in my young 20s, I’ve come up with some extremely simple yet effective strategies to stay safe and comfortable on the road. Here are 15 steps to help you stay safe while enjoying the freedom of solo travel:
1. Carry Pepper Spray or a Whistle

Always have some sort of self-defense tool, like pepper spray or a whistle, with you. While I’ve never had to use mine, knowing it’s there in case of an emergency brings peace of mind when traveling alone.
2. Stay Off Your Phone While Walking

This might sound simple, but it’s crucial. Walking with your head buried in your phone—whether you’re using Google Maps or checking social media—makes you stand out. It marks you as a tourist and leaves you less aware of your surroundings. Keep your head up and walk with confidence as you navigate the streets of a new place.
3. Dress Conservatively in Certain Cultures

In countries with conservative cultures, it’s important to blend in by covering up and avoiding flashy or revealing outfits. Dressing appropriately can help prevent unwanted attention and stares. Simple, modest clothing not only respects local customs but also helps you stay under the radar and avoid any unnecessary comments or looks from men.
4. Find Friends When Going Out at Night

When heading out at night, especially in unfamiliar places, it’s always better to find a friend or group to go with. Hostels, Facebook groups, and solo travel apps are great ways to meet people. Being alone at night can make you vulnerable, especially if alcohol is involved. Find a good buddy, and try and stick with them, especially when headed home. If you can avoid leaving by yourself and find a friend to share a taxi at night.
5. Share Your Location and Itinerary with Loved Ones

Before embarking on any solo trip, ensure that your friends and family know your plans. Share your location in real-time with close contacts so they can check in on you if needed. Also, provide someone with your itinerary so they can track your movements and know where you’re supposed to be.
6. Opt for Female-Only Dorms in Hostels

If you’re staying in hostels, choosing a female-only dorm can provide added peace of mind. Especially in party hostels or larger cities, staying in a women-only room eliminates the concern of dealing with drunken male roommates or feeling uncomfortable.
7. Research Your Destination Thoroughly

Always do proper research on the culture, safety, and norms of the country you’re visiting. Learn about potential scams, dangerous areas, and cultural expectations. Knowing this information beforehand will help you avoid difficult situations and make smarter travel decisions. It’s better to learn beforehand than find out the hard way!
8. Know Your Embassy’s Location and Contact Info

Before traveling to a new country, take a few minutes to look up the contact information for your embassy. If you lose your passport, fall ill, or encounter any crisis, your embassy can provide essential help. It’s a simple step that can make all the difference if something goes wrong. Don’t hesitate to reach out to them-thats what they are there for!
9. Be Cautious When Drinking

If you like to enjoy a drink while traveling, it’s important to be extra cautious. Keep an eye on your drink, stay aware of your surroundings, and limit your intake. Never take a drink that’s already been opened, make sure you can watch the person who has made your drink and served it to you. It’s easy to let your guard down, but getting too intoxicated can leave you in a vulnerable position, especially when you’re alone.
10. Print Extra Copies of Important Documents

Before you leave, make multiple copies of your passport, IDs, travel insurance, and driver’s license. Carry a copy with you and leave another with someone you trust. If your documents get lost or stolen, having backups will save you time and stress. I also recommend taking a photo of all of your important documents as well just to have another backup as well.
11. Get an International Phone Plan or eSIM

Having reliable phone service is a game changer when traveling alone. Look into international phone plans or purchase an eSIM for the country you’re visiting. Being able to call for help, check directions, or contact someone when needed is critical to staying safe. You would rather spend 5 dollars on a SIM card, than be lost in the middle of a foreign city not having a way to get home on your own.
12. Be Smart with Social Media

While it’s fun to share your travel adventures in real-time, it’s safer to post your updates after you’ve moved on to a new location. Avoid posting where you are in the moment to prevent unwanted attention or the risk of someone tracking your movements. With social media being so popular, it’s very easy for people to track you and stalk your location via your posts. Even if you don’t post exact locations, photos can reveal hints to stalkers and allow them to figure out your movements and location.
13. Prioritize Safety Over Budget

As much as we all want to save money when traveling, there are times when safety should come before budget. Whether it’s taking a taxi instead of public transportation at night or upgrading from a sketchy hostel to a more secure option, it’s always worth paying a little extra for peace of mind. I always assess both options, but if I’m feeling uneasy or uncomfortable about the cheaper option, I will always opt for spending a few extra dollars.
14. Avoid Arriving in a City at Night

Try to plan your arrival in new cities during daylight hours if you can. Arriving at night can make you much more vulnerable, especially when you’re carrying all your belongings and navigating unfamiliar streets. You stand out to potential predators in the middle of the night when carrying your bags. Even if it costs a bit more, opt for transportation that gets you to your destination safely during the day.
15. Get Comfortable with Lying

As strange as this sounds, it’s one of the most important tips. Getting comfortable with lying to strangers can keep you safe. I often get asked the same questions by men, like, “Are you traveling alone?” or “Do you have a boyfriend?” I never tell the truth. I always say I’m traveling with someone, or that I have a boyfriend or husband—even if I don’t. You can easily lie to a stranger and let them know your “significant other” is using the restroom or grabbing you some food, to give them the hint to leave you alone. Some women even wear fake wedding rings in certain countries to avoid unwanted attention. And never tell anyone exactly where you’re staying—it’s a simple way to keep yourself safe from potential stalkers.
Solo female travel is an incredibly enriching and liberating experience, but it does come with risks. By following these steps and remaining aware, you can ensure your journey is as safe as it is unforgettable. Stay safe and happy solo travel!
