Are you craving a tropical island escape without the crowds, chaos, and hefty price tag of popular tourist destinations? If so, Koh Rong Samloem might just be the peaceful paradise you’re looking for. Nestled in the Gulf of Thailand off the coast of Cambodia, this tranquil island is part of a chain of islands known for their pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and relaxed vibe.
After spending a week on Koh Rong Samloem, I can confidently say it’s the perfect tropical island destination for solo travelers, couples, and families alike. It offers a chance to unwind and reconnect with nature, far from the usual tourist traps. Let me share why Koh Rong Samloem should be at the top of your travel list.
Why Koh Rong Samloem is a Tranquil Tropical Escape

Koh Rong Samloem, though just a stone’s throw away from the bustling Koh Rong, exudes a completely different energy. Koh Rong, the larger island of the two, is known for its vibrant backpacker scene, lively nightlife, and an abundance of activities, which have led to more tourist traffic and the unfortunate build-up of trash in some areas. While Koh Rong still attracts travelers for its lively atmosphere, Koh Rong Samloem stands out for its peaceful, laid-back vibe, offering the perfect spot for those looking for something quieter and more serene.

The island’s charm lies in its limited development, with a few stunning, peaceful beaches, charming fishing villages, and relaxed restaurants. Whether you’re looking for budget-friendly accommodations or a touch of luxury, Koh Rong Samloem caters to all kinds of travelers. This hidden gem is the ideal destination for those who want to soak up the natural beauty, relax in peace, and explore an unspoiled tropical paradise.
How to Get to Koh Rong Samloem

Getting to Koh Rong Samloem is easy, with ferries running from the city of Sihanoukville, Cambodia. There are two main ferry options: the slow ferry and the speed ferry. I opted for the speed ferry both ways, which takes about 30 minutes, and it was a smooth ride with great views of the surrounding islands.
Sihanoukville, however, is a city I wouldn’t recommend lingering in. It has been overtaken by Chinese investments, with unfinished or abandoned high-rise hotels and casinos dominating the skyline. The city feels a bit like a ghost town, and it’s best to pass through quickly to catch your ferry.
If you’re coming from Siem Reap, the journey to Sihanoukville takes around 12 hours by bus, but it’s only a four-hour ride from Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s capital. You can easily fly into Phnom Penh, catch a bus or taxi to the ferry terminal, and head straight to Koh Rong Samloem.
Where to Stay on Koh Rong Samloem

During my stay, I opted for Onederz Hostel on the bay side of the island. Onederz runs a wonderful hostel with dorms, private rooms, a restaurant, and a bar. They also offer beachside seating with hammocks and loungers, making it the perfect spot to relax and enjoy the ocean breeze. The hostel is conveniently located, and they also offer ferry and bus transport arrangements, making it easy to plan your journey.
For those seeking a bit more luxury, there are several resorts on the island, such as Sara Resort and Eden Resort. Both offer beautiful beachfront views, swimming pools, and delicious meals. If you prefer an even more peaceful, secluded experience, consider booking a bungalow at Lazy Beach Resort, located on the more tranquil Lazy Beach, accessible via a 25-minute walk from Saracen Bay.
What to Do on Koh Rong Samloem

One of the most enchanting aspects of Koh Rong Samloem is the simplicity of things to do. The island is meant for slowing down and enjoying the unspoiled beauty of nature.
You’ll find three main beaches: Saracen Bay, Sunset Beach, and Lazy Beach. Each offers its own charm and relaxation. Saracen Bay is where most accommodations and restaurants are located, with a long stretch of beach perfect for walking, swimming, and lounging. In the evenings, as the tide recedes, the beach becomes even more walkable, offering a serene ambiance.

For a quieter experience, head to Sunset Beach or Lazy Beach. These beaches are more pristine and much less developed. They offer the perfect backdrop for a relaxing day, and there are a few cozy restaurants where you can grab a bite to eat.
Beyond the beaches, there are plenty of activities to enjoy. You can take a boat trip around the island to watch the sunset, explore the local fishing village, or even join a bioluminescent plankton tour, where you can swim at night and experience the magical glow of the ocean. There are also several lookout points on the island, including a lighthouse viewpoint and two spots with incredible views of Saracen Bay and the island’s lush landscape. Be prepared for a bit of a hike, as some trails are not clearly marked, but the stunning views are well worth the effort.
Where to Eat on Koh Rong Samloem

When it comes to food, Koh Rong Samloem offers a variety of tasty options to suit all tastes and budgets. Here are a few of my top recommendations:
• For Coffee: Eden Beach Resort offers a lovely spot for a coffee, right on the beach next to their pool. Perfect for a relaxing morning.
• For Mediterranean Food: Head to By the Sea for a delicious Mediterranean experience. The Turkish owner serves up excellent falafel, hummus, and other Mediterranean delights, all with a beachfront view.
• For BBQ: Almost all restaurants on the island offer beachside BBQ dinners, and Onederz Hostel is a great option for a casual, tasty BBQ night.
• For Breakfast: Onederz offers a fantastic breakfast menu with everything from eggs and pancakes to fresh fruit and yogurt at affordable prices.
• For Beachside Lunch: Lazy Beach Bar is the go-to spot on Lazy Beach for lunch. The food is a bit pricier than other places, but the quality is fantastic, and it’s the only restaurant on the beach.
Why Koh Rong Samloem is Perfect for Everyone

Whether you’re a solo traveler seeking peace and quiet, a couple looking for a romantic island retreat, or a family searching for an idyllic vacation spot, Koh Rong Samloem is the ideal destination. The island offers a peaceful, untouched environment that provides the perfect backdrop for relaxation and exploration. As of now, Koh Rong Samloem remains a tranquil gem, untouched by mass tourism, but that could change in the future.
If you’re considering a trip to Cambodia, make sure to visit Koh Rong Samloem soon before its simple, serene lifestyle is disrupted by larger crowds. Whether you’re lounging on the beach, swimming in crystal-clear waters, or enjoying a sunset boat trip, Koh Rong Samloem is the ultimate tropical escape.
So pack your bags, head to Koh Rong Samloem, and let the island’s charm sweep you away into relaxation and beauty. It’s truly a hidden gem waiting to be explored!
