El Nido to Coron: The Ultimate Island-Hopping Expedition

If you’re heading to the Philippines, this three-day island-hopping expedition is an absolute must. Some travel experiences are enjoyable and memorable, while others completely exceed expectations, leaving you feeling fulfilled and in awe of the world. The boat expedition between El Nido and Coron is one of those rare adventures—an immersive journey through some of the most stunning, remote islands in the Philippines.

This route is one of the most popular boat expeditions in the country, and for good reason. Whether you start in El Nido or Coron, the experience offers an unforgettable way to witness the raw beauty of Palawan, far from the usual tourist hotspots. Picture yourself gliding through turquoise waters, snorkeling among vibrant coral reefs, and spending nights on secluded islands under a sky full of stars. It’s not just about getting from one place to another—it’s about fully embracing the island lifestyle, connecting with fellow travelers, and experiencing the Philippines in its most authentic form.

Choosing the Right Route: El Nido to Coron or Coron to El Nido?

Remote island in Palawan

This expedition can be done in either direction—starting from El Nido and making your way north to Coron or beginning in Coron and heading south to El Nido. Both options offer the same breathtaking scenery and island-hopping experience, so your decision comes down to logistics and personal preference.

If you’re flying into Palawan, a great way to structure your trip is by arriving in Puerto Princesa, the main gateway to the region. From there, you can make your way up the island, stopping in Port Barton before reaching El Nido. This route allows you to explore more of Palawan before embarking on the expedition to Coron. Since there are no international flights to Coron, this plan also makes it easier to continue your travels elsewhere in the Philippines. However, if your itinerary works better the other way around, starting in Coron is just as spectacular.

How Many Days Should You Choose?

Boat on Pass island, Palawan

There are a few variations of the expedition, typically ranging from:

• 3 days, 2 nights (a popular choice offering the perfect balance of adventure and relaxation)

• 4 days, 3 nights (great for those who want more time to explore and immerse themselves in island life)

• Private tours (ideal for those seeking a secluded, customized experience—though significantly pricier)

I opted for the 3-day, 2-night expedition and found it to be the perfect length. The itinerary allowed plenty of time to visit remote beaches, snorkel in crystal-clear waters, and soak in the island scenery, all while forming great connections with fellow travelers. If you’re traveling solo, a private tour might not be worth the cost, as part of the magic of this journey is the shared experience—whether you’re with friends, a partner, or venturing alone. The group atmosphere makes it easy to meet like-minded adventurers and enjoy the trip to its fullest.

Choosing a Tour Operator

Several companies run these expeditions, and while they all follow a similar route, some offer slightly different experiences in terms of boat size, amenities, and pricing. A few highly rated operators include:

• Tao Expeditions

• Outpost Castaway Tours

• Keelooma expeditions

• Buhay Isla

• SeaQuest (the company I personally went with and had a fantastic experience)

While some boats may be a bit larger or more comfortable than others, the core experience remains the same—spending your days exploring untouched islands and your nights camping under the stars. My advice? Choose a company that fits your budget and travel style, but don’t stress too much—whichever you pick, you’re in for an incredible adventure.

Daily Itinerary: From Sunrise to Sunset

• Morning Departure & Boarding: Your adventure kicks off early—usually around 8 AM, though the exact time can vary by tour company. You’ll be picked up in your town (whether El Nido or Coron) and driven in a comfortable van to the boat port. In El Nido, for example, this transfer typically takes about 45 minutes along many roads dotted with lush greenery and dozens of palm trees. Once you arrive at the larger port, you board the boat, receive a brief orientation about the vessel and safety protocols, and meet the friendly crew and chefs who will ensure you have a smooth journey.

• Breakfast on the Water: Shortly after setting sail, the boat serves a wonderful buffet-style breakfast. Imagine an array of tropical fruits like mangoes, bananas, and pineapple, alongside local treats and freshly brewed coffee. There’s an emphasis on keeping you well-fueled and hydrated, with plenty of water—and fresh juices such as mango, pineapple and more. One of the best parts of these tours is that everything is included: meals, snorkeling gear, accommodations, and even a selection of alcoholic beverages for those who wish to toast to the adventure.

Each day follows a similar structure but offers a different mix of activities. Whether you’re swimming in secluded bays, playing beach volleyball on untouched sands, or simply relaxing on the deck with breathtaking views, every moment is designed to create unforgettable memories.

• Lunch on Board:

Midday brings a hearty lunch prepared on board, featuring local flavors that complement the tropical setting. This meal not only refuels you but also provides another opportunity to mingle with fellow travelers and the locals on board. We learned so much about the Philippines from our local guides who were always more than happy to share their stories and experiences with us.

Campsite night 1

• Evening: Campsite Life and Local Vibes: As the day winds down, the boat makes its way to a designated campsite along a secluded beach. Arriving just before sunset, you’re given a chance to choose your private beach hut, typically located just a few steps from the water. This is the perfect moment to rinse off, change into comfortable clothes, and settle in to witness the mesmerizing sunset over the horizon.

Once the sun dips below the horizon, the campsite transforms into a lively social hub. A delicious dinner is served, often accompanied by local delicacies that highlight Filipino culinary traditions and lots of fresh fish. As the night deepens, the friendly local crew and fellow travelers gather for drinks—rum and coke being a popular choice—and impromptu karaoke sessions. These evenings are filled with laughter, music, and shared stories, making the experience as much about community and connection as it is about adventures

• Rest and Recharge: After a day packed with exploration and a night of vibrant festivities, you’ll retire to your beach hut. The peaceful sound of the waves puts you right to sleep, ensuring you’re well-rested for the next day of discovery. Mornings at the campsite typically start with a cup of brewed coffee at around 8am giving you a gentle nudge to prepare for another day exploring the remote and stunning islands of Palawan.

The morning might begin at a more leisurely pace as you savor your final coffee and take in the serene surroundings one last time. Soon, the boat charts a course back to your starting point—be it El Nido or Coron. The return journey offers a final glimpse of the mesmerizing seascapes, gradually transitioning from the untouched beauty of the islands back to the bustling energy of town life.

Arriving around 5:30 PM, you’ll have ample time to disembark, collect your belongings, and arrange transportation to your hotel or hostel before nightfall. By the end of this adventure, you’re likely to feel a mix of exhaustion and exhilaration, your heart brimming with memories of an unreal journey through one of the world’s most stunning archipelagos.

What to Know Before You Embark on This Expedition

Before you commit to this adventure, it’s important to understand the conditions and lifestyle that come with the territory:

Beach hut campsite 2

• Embrace Simplicity: This isn’t an experience for those who require high-end amenities. The beach huts you’ll sleep in are incredibly simple—often consisting of just a thin sheet and a mosquito net. Expect minimal comforts, as the focus is on nature and adventure rather than luxury. The simplicity means you might encounter bugs and heat, elements that are simply part of the experience.

• Basic Facilities: Although you will have access to a shower each night, these are very basic setups. They’re designed to help you rinse off after a long day of activities, not to provide a spa-like experience. Given the active nature of the trip—lots of time spent in the sun and ocean—don’t be surprised if you don’t feel completely “clean” at all times.

• Long Boat Rides and Motion: This expedition involves several hours on the boat as you travel between islands. If you’re prone to seasickness or generally uncomfortable on long boat rides, this might not be the ideal experience for you. The journey covers a substantial distance between El Nido and Coron over the course of three days, so prepare yourself for extended periods at sea.

How to Prepare for the Expedition

Coffee spot morning 2

Proper preparation can make a world of difference in your comfort and overall experience. Here’s how to get ready:

• Pack Smart with a Dry Bag: Investing in a good quality dry bag is essential. These bags are readily available throughout the Philippines and are invaluable on the boat. Since your larger luggage is stowed away safely under the boat, you only need a small bag or dry bag with your immediate necessities. Pack the essentials—personal toiletries, sunscreen, a bathing suit, a change of clothes for the evening, cameras, sandals, a hat, and sunglasses. Keeping your items dry ensures they stay in good condition despite the humid, wet environment.

• Stay Hydrated and Sun-Safe: The Philippine sun is intense. It’s crucial to drink plenty of water both before and during your trip to avoid dehydration, especially when spending long hours in the sun and saltwater. Apply sunscreen regularly—remember that the sun can burn your skin in as little as 30 minutes. Protect yourself with a broad-brimmed hat and sunglasses, and don’t forget to reapply sunscreen throughout the day.

Kareoke nights with locals and new friends

• Adopt an Open Mind and Positive Attitude: Much of the magic of this expedition comes from the camaraderie among travelers and the local crew. Go into the trip with an open mind and heart. Embrace the opportunity to connect with new people and share this unique adventure. The bonds you form on board can transform the experience, turning a simple trip into a memorable, life-enhancing journey.

By understanding these key points and preparing accordingly, you’ll be well-equipped to fully enjoy everything this expedition has to offer—from the rugged beauty of the islands to the unforgettable moments shared with fellow adventurers.

Paddle boarding around a remote island

I can’t recommend this experience enough for those who love adventure, island life, and marine exploration. Spending days cruising through crystal-clear waters, snorkeling around vibrant reefs, and camping on remote islands is an unforgettable way to experience the magic of the Philippines. If you’re ready to embrace boat life, connect with like-minded travelers, and fully immerse yourself in nature, this is hands down one of the best experiences you can have in the country.
