Morocco’s Hollywood: Exploring Ait Ben Haddou

Have you ever dreamed of visiting a real-life movie set in the middle of the desert? If so, I have the perfect destination for you. Deep in the Moroccan desert lies one of the most iconic filming locations in the world. This place has been featured in films and shows like Gladiator, Game of Thrones, The Mummy, Indiana Jones, Outer Banks, and so many more. But Ait Ben Haddou is not just famous for movies. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage site and is worth visiting for its history, culture, architecture, and of course, its cinematic fame.

Ait Ben Haddou is a stunning village literally in the middle of the desert. Its buildings are made from mud bricks and clay, all in the same color and style, giving the village a truly uniform and authentic Moroccan look. Walking through it feels like stepping back in time, but also like you have walked into a movie. Every building, alley, and street has a charm that is hard to describe. The village is incredibly photogenic, both from afar and up close. From the hilltops, you can see the full layout, the surrounding desert, and the dramatic landscapes that make this place perfect for filming.

The village itself is also historically significant. It was an important stop on the caravan route between the Sahara Desert and Marrakech. People lived very traditionally here, and while only about five families still reside in the original homes today, the rest of the population lives across the river in a newer village. One fascinating part of the history is that the village was once home to many Jewish families. The Amazigh, or indigenous people of the region, included Jewish members, and you can still see a synagogue in the village. Learning about how the village has evolved over time and how its residents’ lives have changed adds another layer of meaning when you are walking through the streets.

As you explore Ait Ben Haddou, it is easy to understand why filmmakers love it. The streets and architecture are extremely well-preserved, giving the village an authentic, timeless feel. The surrounding desert landscapes are dramatic, vast, and otherworldly. Walking here, you can picture exactly where battle scenes in Gladiator were filmed or where characters from Game of Thrones wandered. Even if you have not seen these films, the village feels magical, like it is frozen in time.

Visiting is easier than you might think. From Marrakech, you can book a transfer and even spend a night in nearby Ouarzazate, which is also home to filming studios and a few movie locations. There is a studio between the village and Ouarzazate that you can tour to see where some scenes were shot. If you are on a desert tour to Merzouga, most tours include a stop at Ait Ben Haddou for a short visit. I highly recommend going early in the morning or later in the afternoon. The streets can get extremely hot, and the village gradually slopes uphill. Climbing to the top is absolutely worth it. You will get panoramic views of the village, the desert, and the surrounding mountains that are unforgettable.

The local artists and their artwork around the village.

When walking around, it is important to respect the families still living there. The village is alive in a small but real way. You will also find plenty of stalls and shops selling beautiful crafts, paintings, and jewelry. I picked up a pair of earrings and even had my name painted in the Berber language, which was such a special souvenir. There is a small entrance fee of around five US dollars, and I definitely recommend hiring a local guide. They can tell you all about the history, architecture, and movie sets, making the experience so much richer.

Ait Ben Haddou is truly one of the most unique places I have ever visited. It combines history, culture, and cinematic magic in a way that feels almost unreal. Walking through it, seeing the traditional architecture, exploring the shops, and climbing to the top while looking out over the vast desert, I could not believe this place actually exists. If you love movies, history, or just discovering something completely unique, this village is an experience you will never forget.
