Underrated Central America Vacation Destination

We all know Central America for destinations like Costa Rica, and more recently Guatemala with its rise in tourism. Some people head to the beaches of Panama, while others stick to the comfort of an all inclusive resort in Mexico. But what if I told you there is a destination right in between all of these, in a place you might not expect?

Welcome to the beautiful, diverse, and rapidly evolving country of El Salvador.

Once known for having one of the highest crime rates in the world, El Salvador has undergone a massive transformation in recent years and is now considered one of the safest countries in the Americas. Beyond that, it truly has everything you could want from a Central American vacation. Beautiful beaches, incredible surf, vibrant culture, charming towns, and even volcanoes you can hike.

One of the best parts, and something that makes this destination even more appealing, is how easy it is to get here. Flying into Monseñor Óscar Arnulfo Romero International Airport is simple, with direct and affordable flights from many major cities across North America. Whether you are coming from the United States or Canada, it is a very accessible destination that does not require long or complicated travel days.

Something a lot of people do not realize is that the international airport is not actually located inside San Salvador. Instead, it sits in between the city and the coast, which makes getting around incredibly convenient. You are roughly the same distance from both the capital and the beach towns, so you can choose your direction without needing to backtrack or deal with heavy city traffic right away.

This means you can land and be on the beach in under an hour, or head into the city just as easily. It is one of those small travel details that makes the whole experience feel smooth and stress free.

As the country continues to rebuild and develop, its tourism industry is growing quickly, especially along the coastline through a government initiative known as Surf City. This project stretches across a large portion of the coast, connecting beach towns and surf spots that are quickly gaining global attention. Here, you will find wide black sand beaches, world class waves, warm sunny weather year round, and some of the most welcoming people.

Because tourism here is still relatively new, you will not find the same level of large scale luxury resorts or overdeveloped infrastructure that you might see in other destinations. That is part of the appeal. It still feels authentic, raw, and undiscovered in many ways.

If you are looking to escape the cold, slow down for a bit, or experience something a little different, this is the place.

Two standout spots along the coast are El Tunco and El Zonte. These towns are about 30 minutes apart and both fall within the Surf City region. Whether you are a solo traveler, a couple, a family, or traveling with friends, they offer the perfect balance of relaxation, adventure, and culture.

El Tunco is located about 50 minutes from the main international airport, with El Zonte another 25 to 30 minutes down the coastal road. Getting there is simple. You can use local transport, Uber, or inDrive, all of which are affordable and easy to navigate.

Both towns sit right on the ocean, with black sand beaches lined with palm trees and views of the Pacific stretching endlessly ahead. The atmosphere is laid back and easy going. It is the kind of place where your days naturally fall into a rhythm of slow mornings, time at the beach, good food, and sunset views.

Accommodation options are varied and accessible. You will find everything from beachfront hostels and cozy guesthouses to boutique hotels, apartments, Airbnbs, and a few more elevated stays. Most places are within walking distance to the beach, making it easy to settle in and unwind.

And the food is easily one of the highlights.

El Salvador is known for its national dish, pupusas. These thick corn tortillas are stuffed with fillings like cheese, beans, meat, or vegetables, and are typically served with a cabbage slaw and sauce. The best ones are usually found in small, local pupuserías, often simple roadside spots or family run kitchens. They are not only delicious but incredibly affordable, often around one dollar each, making them a go to meal any time of day.

Beyond pupusas, you will find a mix of fresh seafood like ceviche and grilled fish, traditional Salvadoran breakfasts, and plenty of cafes offering more western style meals and coffee. It is a great balance that caters to both local flavor and familiar comforts.

While both El Tunco and El Zonte offer similar coastal experiences, they each have their own feel.

El Tunco is the more developed and lively of the two. It has more restaurants, cafes, nightlife, and accommodation options, making it more social and energetic. El Zonte, on the other hand, is quieter, smaller, and more relaxed. It feels more tucked away and is perfect if you are looking for something slower and less busy.

One of the most unique aspects of this area and the country as a whole is its adoption of Bitcoin as legal currency. El Salvador made history as the first country to do this, and you will see signs everywhere along the coast accepting it. El Zonte in particular is known as Bitcoin Beach and has become one of the most recognized places in the world for Bitcoin use in everyday life.

If you are looking to explore beyond the beach, there is plenty to do. Within one to two hours, you can reach San Salvador or Santa Ana for a completely different experience. One of the most popular day trips is hiking the Santa Ana Volcano. It is a relatively straightforward hike with incredible views that is absolutely worth it.

There are also smaller towns scattered along the coast in both directions if you are looking for even more peace and quiet and a slower pace.

Compared to places like Costa Rica, Mexico, or even parts of Guatemala, El Salvador is still under the radar. It has not reached that same level of tourism yet, which makes it ideal if you are looking for something more unique and less crowded.

What really makes this country stand out is the people. They are warm, welcoming, and genuinely excited to share their country with visitors. There is a sense of pride and optimism that you feel almost immediately.

Between the surf, the scenery, the food, and the atmosphere, El Salvador is quickly becoming one of the most exciting emerging destinations in Central America.

If you are looking for warm weather, good energy, and a destination that still feels a little undiscovered, this might just be your next trip.
