The Best Places to Stargaze Around the World

Seeing the world through different cities, countries, islands, and cultures is absolutely fascinating, but what about seeing the world after dark?

For many people, stars are something they rarely get to experience. Light pollution, tall buildings, and crowded cities often make it impossible to see more than a handful of stars in the sky. Traveling gives us the opportunity to experience the night sky from completely different places and perspectives, often revealing things we have never seen before.

Stargazing is one of those travel experiences that feels surprisingly meaningful. It is simple, free, and often becomes one of the most memorable moments of a trip. There is something about standing beneath thousands of stars, spotting the Milky Way stretching across the sky, or catching a shooting star that instantly puts everything into perspective. It makes you feel small in the best possible way.

The quiet nights, the unobstructed views, the sparkling sky, a campfire nearby, and a late-night conversation under the stars all become part of the experience. Some of my favorite travel memories have happened long after the sun went down.

Over the years, I have been lucky enough to see some incredible night skies around the world. While I have seen beautiful stars in many places, a few destinations stand far above the rest. These are my favorite places I’ve visited for stargazing and some of the most unforgettable night skies I have ever experienced.

Socotra Island, Yemen

The night sky full of stars on Socotra Island, Yemen.

One of my favorite places in the world is the remote island of Socotra, located in the Arabian Sea off the coast of Yemen.

Socotra feels like another planet. The island is incredibly isolated and largely undeveloped, which means there is virtually no light pollution. Outside of the small airport and main town, there are very few lights anywhere on the island. As a result, the night sky is unbelievably clear.

Most travelers explore Socotra by camping around the island, which means every night is spent somewhere completely remote. One evening you may be camping on a beach, the next in the mountains, and the next among the island’s famous Dragon Blood Trees. No matter where you are, the stars are incredible.

The island is known for its unique landscapes, strange-looking trees, dramatic cliffs, and pristine beaches. Seeing these landscapes illuminated beneath a sky full of stars makes the experience even more surreal. The Dragon Blood Trees in particular create an incredible silhouette against the Milky Way.

Almost every night we could clearly see the Milky Way stretching across the sky. We saw countless stars, bright constellations, and more shooting stars than I could keep track of. What made the experience even more special was the complete lack of distractions. There is very little service on the island, so you truly feel disconnected from the outside world and completely present in the moment.

Kalalau Beach, Kauai

The stars on Kalalau beach on a cloudy night behind our campfire.

Another one of my favorite places in the world is Kalalau Beach on the famous Na Pali Coast of Kauai.

The Na Pali Coast is one of the most beautiful coastlines on Earth. Towering green cliffs rise straight out of the ocean, creating one of the most dramatic landscapes I have ever seen. While many people experience the coastline by boat or helicopter, the best way to experience it is by hiking the Kalalau Trail.

The Kalalau Trail remains the best hike I have ever done.

At the end of the trail sits Kalalau Beach, where backpackers can camp for several nights. Because the beach is so remote, there is almost no artificial light. On a clear night, the stars seem endless.

Lying on the beach after sunset, listening to the waves crash against the shore while staring at the Milky Way overhead, is something I will never forget. The contrast between the dark mountains, the Pacific Ocean, and the bright night sky creates an incredible atmosphere. It feels completely disconnected from the modern world and reminds you how beautiful simplicity can be.

North Shore, Oahu

Unlike some of the other locations on this list, the North Shore of Oahu is one of the easiest places to experience an incredible night sky.

You do not need a multi-day trek or a remote desert expedition to enjoy the stars here. The North Shore offers long stretches of beach, warm weather, and relatively low light pollution compared to Honolulu and the southern side of the island.

On a clear night, you can simply stay on the beach after sunset and watch the stars emerge. Depending on the season, you may even be able to see the Milky Way. Add in the sound of waves, the warm Hawaiian air, and the chance of spotting a shooting star, and it becomes an unforgettable experience.

Sometimes the best stargazing destinations are not the most remote. Sometimes they are simply places where you can slow down, sit on the beach, and look up.

Nong Khiaw, Laos

Views from our campsite on top of the mountain in Nong Khiaw.

Located in northern Laos, Nong Khiaw is a small riverside town surrounded by dramatic limestone mountains.

The village itself has very little development and minimal light pollution, making it a great place to see the stars. However, the real magic happens above the town.

One of the area’s most famous viewpoints sits high above the valley. Some travelers choose to stay overnight near the viewpoint, where they can watch the stars throughout the night and the sunrise the following morning.

The landscape is incredible. Massive limestone peaks rise out of the valleys while low clouds settle between them. At night, the stars seem to stretch endlessly across the sky. The combination of mountains, clouds, and stars creates one of the most unique stargazing settings I have ever experienced.

The entire area feels peaceful, rural, and untouched. It is the kind of place where the nights are silent except for sounds from nature.

Negev Desert, Israel

Deep in southern Israel lies the Negev Desert, one of the best places in the Middle East for stargazing.

The desert’s dry climate and clear air create excellent visibility after dark. There are also vast stretches of open land with almost no obstructions, allowing for incredible views of the night sky.

Many Bedouin camps throughout the region offer overnight experiences where you can sleep beneath the stars. Away from city lights, the sky becomes incredibly bright and detailed.

The silence of the desert is what stands out the most. There is something special about sitting in complete stillness, surrounded by endless desert landscapes while thousands of stars shine overhead.

The Negev is also known for excellent meteor shower viewing conditions, making it a fantastic destination for anyone who loves astronomy.

Jaislamer, India

Stars seen from the desert in Jaisalmer, India.

Located in the state of Rajasthan near the border with Pakistan, Jaisalmer serves as the gateway to the Thar Desert.

This area offers one of the most unique desert experiences I have had anywhere in the world. Numerous desert camps operate outside the city, allowing visitors to spend the night among the sand dunes.

One thing I particularly loved about Jaisalmer was the overnight setup. Many camps provide elevated beds or comfortable mattresses right in the middle of the dunes, allowing you to sleep beneath the stars.

As the desert cools after sunset, the sky comes alive. Thousands of stars appear overhead while camels rest nearby and the rolling dunes stretch endlessly into the distance.

Compared to some of the world’s more famous desert destinations, Jaisalmer receives far fewer international visitors, making the experience feel even more special.

Sahara Desert, Morocco

No list of stargazing destinations would be complete without the Sahara Desert.

The area around Merzouga offers some of the most spectacular desert scenery in Morocco and some of the clearest night skies I have ever seen.

With almost no light pollution and vast open landscapes, the conditions for stargazing are exceptional. The Milky Way often appears bright and incredibly detailed, stretching across the desert sky.

Many visitors stay in desert camps among the dunes. After dinner, you can simply walk a short distance away from camp lights and find yourself surrounded by darkness and stars.

The Sahara is stunning during the day, with its golden dunes and dramatic landscapes. But once the sun sets, the desert transforms into something entirely different. The silence, darkness, and endless stars make it feel almost magical.

Siwa Oasis, Egypt

Located near Egypt’s border with Libya, Siwa Oasis is one of the country’s most isolated and fascinating destinations.

Surrounded by the Western Desert, Siwa experiences very little light pollution, making it an excellent place for stargazing.

Whether you spend the night in the desert or simply venture away from town after sunset, the visibility is incredible. The dry desert air creates clear conditions, allowing thousands of stars to shine brightly overhead.

What makes Siwa unique is the combination of palm groves, desert landscapes, and massive sand dunes. Seeing these landscapes beneath a sky full of stars creates an unforgettable scene.

The peaceful atmosphere of Siwa makes it the perfect place to slow down, disconnect, and simply enjoy the beauty of the night sky.

Final Thoughts

Sky full of stars in the Sahara Desert in Morocco.

Every destination on this list is unique.

During the day, these places are filled with adventure, culture, landscapes, and unforgettable experiences. But once the sun goes down, they all share something in common: peace.

They offer quiet surroundings, minimal light pollution, and some of the most beautiful night skies I have ever seen. Whether it is a remote island in Yemen, a beach in Hawaii, or a desert in North Africa, there is something special about ending the day beneath thousands of stars.

No matter where you travel, I highly recommend finding at least one night to step away from the city lights. Find a quiet place, look up, and simply take it all in.

Some of the best travel moments happen after dark.
